Antique French Wooden Farm Tools Trio - Rakes and Hay Fork

A trio of antique wooden farm tools — two rakes and a hay fork — gathered one by one from local brocantes over the years and given a permanent home in the courtyard of Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter Wells's farmhouse near Vaison-la-Romaine. Each piece was a considered find, the kind of unhurried discovery that Patricia has always loved about brocantes, and together they have stood in that courtyard for decades, earning their place through character rather than ceremony. All three are fashioned entirely from wood, their long handles worn to a silvery, weathered grey that comes only from years of outdoor life in the Provençal sun. The hay fork is particularly striking: four curved tines spread naturally from the shaft, shaped by a craftsman who understood the flex and grain of the wood rather than by any machine. One rake carries slender iron-tipped wooden teeth set into a straight crossbar; the second has a gently curved head fitted with rounded wooden pegs. Each tool is distinct in form, yet clearly born of the same rural tradition — generous in scale, confident in proportion, and carrying the honest patina of things that were genuinely used. Long retired from duty, this trio has served Chanteduc as decoration, and it is easy to see why. Leaned together against a stone wall, arranged in a tall ceramic pot, or mounted flat against a barn door or garden fence, they bring an easy, grounded presence to any outdoor space or rustic interior — a reminder that the most enduring objects are often the most straightforwardly made.
