A beautiful wooden postal letter box from around 1900, formerly used by La Poste for daily mail collections. Its sloped lid and simple rectangular form are crafted from weathered pine boards with a timeworn blue finish, the official color of the French postal service before the adoption of yellow in the mid-20th century. The front door retains its original metal escutcheon, hand-forged lock and key, and small enamel plaques indicating the day of collection. This rare survivor captures the quiet charm of rural post offices and village life in early 1900s France. The surface bears an exquisite patina, with layers of faded paint, rust, and wood grain softened by decades of exposure. The lock still functions, though the key can be temperamental.
Decorative and evocative, this post box makes a striking accent in a hallway, library, or garden room. It can be mounted on a wall or placed on a console as a sculptural object, adding depth and character to both rustic and contemporary interiors. It also serves beautifully as a small storage piece for letters, notes, or keepsakes, preserving its original function in a poetic way. A charming fragment of French heritage that embodies history, craftsmanship, and everyday poetry.
