An antique French zinc watering can from Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter Wells’s Provençal home. A piece from a collection of watering cans, gathered for their sculptural charm during years of market mornings. Patricia recalls, “Every time we went to the Carpentras flea market he would pick up another one!” A fond nod to Walter’s gardener’s eye and to the couple’s life among beds of herbs, fruit trees and the teaching table. Crafted in galvanized zinc with a domed cap, arched top and rear handles, and a long tapered spout, it wears the soft, chalky grey of time with honest traces of use. The cylindrical body is ringed with simple raised bands that give it a purposeful profile at a practical garden scale. Pierced and decorative only, it is not intended to hold water, yet it speaks eloquently to the kitchen and garden rhythm that defines Patricia’s world. Set it on a potting bench beside terracotta and thyme, or bring its graphic silhouette indoors on open shelving. It is especially handsome filled with dried stems or a bundle of wooden stakes, lending a gentle note of French country utility to an interior or terrace.

Heavy wear and rustic condition consistent with age and use.
