An antique French zinc watering can from the gardens at Chanteduc, part of a collection of watering cans that were gathered over the years by Patricia and Walter Wells. It reflects Walter’s cheerful collecting streak. As Patricia recalls, “Every time we went to the Carpentras flea market he would pick up another one!” Keen gardeners, they favored useful, timeworn tools that served the house and the potager as faithfully as any cookbook or market basket in their Provençal life.
Galvanized zinc gives this can a soft grey, matte bloom. The body is neatly seamed with a rolled rim, a tapered neck, and a long spout tipped by a domed rose finely perforated for an even sprinkle. Subtle russet flecks at the base and joints speak to years among pots of thyme, bay, and tomatoes that nourished Patricia’s table and teaching. Scaled for easy carrying, it sits naturally on a potting bench or the steps leading to the kitchen. Today it is best enjoyed as décor. Let it anchor a grouping of terracotta pots, hold dried lavender or rosemary by the doorway, or stand as a sculptural note beside the vegetable patch. A modest tool turned cherished companion, it brings the spirit of Chanteduc’s garden to any home, with the intelligent simplicity and generous hospitality that define Patricia Wells.
Heavy wear and rustic condition consistent with age and use.
