Antique Glazed Earthenware Sitz Bath in Pale Yellow - 11¾" x 20½"

This antique glazed earthenware sitz bath dates from the 19th or early 20th century and is a lovely example of traditional household pottery, now seldom seen. Made for personal washing, it has a deep, rounded basin with a raised back and a lower curved front. The back has a rolled rim that projects slightly outward to provide a more secure grip. The interior is finished in a soft buttery-yellow glaze that spills over the edges, while darker ocher drips run down the otherwise unglazed, pale cream exterior. The surface has acquired a lovely mellow patina, with some marks from use, but remains in good condition for its age.

With its generous shape, softly worn finish and beautiful pale colors, this old basin would make a charming planter for a large leafy plant or a collection of flowering bulbs, using a waterproof liner to protect the pottery. In a bathroom, it could hold rolled towels, while in a country kitchen it could be filled with folded linens or a collection of potted herbs. In a garden room, it could also serve as an attractive container for small pots, gardening tools and other essentials.
