This antique earthenware flower holder has a lovely rounded shape, with a full, domed upper section tapering toward a small circular base. Its rich green glaze has subtle variations in tone, with areas of wear revealing the warm terracotta beneath, particularly around the upper section. Numerous small holes are pierced through the rounded top, designed to hold individual flower stems and create a compact arrangement. The slightly irregular handmade shape, scattered glaze losses and small chips give the piece a beautifully rustic appearance. A small loose fragment can be heard rattling inside when the pot is moved.
The fresh green color and simple yet unusual form make this an appealing piece of traditional pottery, even without flowers. It would look charming on a kitchen table filled with a few short garden flowers, or displayed on a shelf in a garden room among other antique glazed vessels. Its wonderfully weathered surface is especially attractive against natural wood or pale stone. Given its age and worn glaze, we recommend using this piece with dried rather than fresh flowers, as its watertightness is uncertain and the enclosed interior would be difficult to clean and dry.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
