A beautiful green-glazed antique preserving jar from Southern France, dating to the late 19th century. The ovoid body is hand-shaped, with gentle irregularities and a soft unevenness that lend a rustic, tactile charm. It rises to a small rolled rim and tapers to a narrow foot. The upper half is finished in a variegated green glaze, shifting from emerald to olive, while the lower section remains unglazed in warm earth tones. A pale slip layer appears at the junction between glaze and clay, creating a soft transition and adding depth to the surface. Fine craquelure runs across the glaze, enriching the color and enhancing its sense of age. The surface shows small rim nicks, light glaze wear, and mineral deposits to the base, all consistent with use and time.
Rooted in the pottery traditions of Southwest France, such vessels were used to preserve duck or goose in fat before refrigeration. The glazed upper sealed the contents, while the unglazed base aided handling and storage. The form remains simple and functional, shaped by hand for everyday use.
Placed on open shelving or a work surface, it brings warmth and texture through its layered greens, earthy base, and lively surface. It works beautifully on its own or grouped with other French pottery, and can serve as a utensil holder, or a simple vase if fitted with a liner.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
