A green-glazed terracotta garden urn with a generous baluster form and waisted foot, circa 1900, originating from the pottery village of Saint-Jean-de-Fos in southern France. The rich apple-green glaze has developed a beautifully mottled surface over time, with areas of wear and loss revealing the warm terracotta beneath and lending the piece a deep, expressive patina. Moulded face medallions animate the front and back - a rare and striking detail that adds a note of refinement and sculptural interest - while the graceful loop handles feature subtle finger-pressed detailing at their base, clearly reflecting the artisanal origins. The rim and foot show chips and losses from prolonged outdoor use, and the interior bears timeworn traces of planting and is pierced for drainage, all contributing to an authentic, weathered character consistent with age.
This urn brings a quietly dramatic presence to an entryway, sunroom, or terrace, whether planted with citrus, bay, or ferns. Indoors, it can be lined and used as a striking holder for a potted tree, or filled with dried flowers. Its soft green glaze and aged surface harmonize beautifully with limestone, plaster, rustic woods, and tailored upholstery, adding a note of Provençal warmth to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
