This early 20th-century French storage jar in glazed terracotta presents a sturdy, upright form with softly swelling sides tapering to a flat base. The mouth is wide and framed by a thick, slightly everted rolled rim, with pulled ear handles set high at the shoulder, compact and functional for lifting. The exterior carries a beautiful glossy green glaze of varied tonality, shifting from moss to olive and enlivened by vertical ochre runs. Around the rim, the glaze pools into darker, thick beads adding texture. Inside, a honey-yellow glaze provides a sealed, practical surface.
Part of the French tradition of kitchen storage pots, this vessel was used to keep foodstuffs preserved in fat, oil, or brine before refrigeration. Copper- and iron-based glazes provided both durability and rich color, while the natural drips and pools of enamel reveal the straightforward techniques of southern and southwestern French workshops in the early 1900s. Wheel-thrown and fitted with pulled handles, these utilitarian jars were the backbone of rural kitchens, valued for their resilience as well as their rustic decorative appeal.
Today, the jar offers authentic character and a grounding green accent in interiors. It can be placed on open kitchen shelving or a farmhouse table to hold utensils, linens, or flowers with a liner. Its earthy glaze pairs beautifully with cutting boards, copper, and stoneware, or it can be grouped with cream and ochre-glazed pottery for tonal contrast. On a console or mantel, it reads as a sculptural accent, bringing depth and texture to rustic, coastal, or modern organic spaces.
