A beautiful antique carved giltwood upholstered two-cushion settee sofa dates from the start of the 1900s in Italy. This elegant and sturdy settee is decorated with acanthus leaf motifs adorning its carved silver gilt and giltwood frame and four curved cabriole legs turned out at the end with petit scrolls. The upholstered upper sides ("ears") of the sofa are connected to a comfortable, curved Louis XV-style backrest with rose cresting. Note the central gilded stylized leaf motif on the seat rail.
A lovely beige crochet trim lines the edges of the frame and start of upholstery. The upholstery has been redone with a beautiful woven silk fabric featuring red flowers on a beige background from a celebrated Italian fabric house. Two soft feather cushion grace the seat. This settee would bring an elegant feel to a living room or at the edge of a large bed.
Note the silver gilt and giltwood shows areas where the paint has worn to expose traces of red paint on the fronts of the arms, possibly the gesso primer.
