This low antique footstool has a simple rectangular wooden frame resting on four short, turned feet. Its padded seat is upholstered in a beautiful woven fabric, possibly silk or a silk blend, with a luminous golden-yellow ground decorated with delicate scrolling flowers and circular medallions in shades of blue and turquoise. The fabric may be of Chinese origin, although similar designs inspired by asian fabrics were also produced by European silk manufacturers. A narrow pale green braid neatly finishes the edges The dark wood provides a warm contrast to the bright upholstery and has developed a mellow patina, with light scratches, marks and wear consistent with age.
