This late 19th-century candlestick in silvered verre mercurisé has an intimate, jewel-like presence, its domed gadrooned foot and slender baluster stem rising to a crisp cylindrical nozzle. The antique internal silvering lends a warm, moonlit glow that plays beautifully with candlelight. It bears the quiet traces of its years - scattered oxidation and speckling within the silvered cavity, and a whisper of wax in the cup - all contributing to its mellow, time-softened patina.
Verre mercurisé, or 19th-century silvered glass, is a double-walled blown-glass technique in which a liquid silver-nitrate solution is introduced into the interior cavity, creating a softly luminous, reflective surface with a characteristic gentle shimmer. French and Italian workshops embraced the method for mantel garnitures, vases, and lighting, prized for their romantic diffusion of light.
This candlestick brings a gentle, poetic glow wherever it is placed: on a mantel beneath an antique mirror, on a console layered with gilt frames, or centered on a dining table dressed in linen and crystal. Pair it with other mercury-glass pieces for a cohesive vignette, or let it stand alone on a bedside or writing desk, where its quiet sparkle adds warmth and texture.
