This charming antique oak stool, likely originally used as a work stool, has a simple, almost primitive design with plenty of folk art character. Its most distinctive feature is the unusual half-oval seat, gently hollowed in the center to create a comfortable, subtly anatomical shape. Four straight, square-section legs are connected by simple wooden stretchers, forming a sturdy, uncomplicated structure. The oak has developed a beautiful, deep brown patina, with darker areas, worn edges and marks from years of use that add richness and character to the wood.
There is something particularly appealing about the honesty of this little stool, with its simple construction and unexpectedly expressive shape. Its rustic, slightly naïve character would sit beautifully in a French country kitchen or beside a fireplace, where it could serve as an occasional seat. It would also make a lovely little side table for a stack of books or a lamp, adding an earthy, artisanal note to a contemporary interior.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
