This small Provençal poêlon from Vallauris, early 20th century, is made of terracotta with a rounded belly and short tubular side handle. The exterior is finished with an eggshell glaze enlivened by blue slip-trailed lines, while the rim and interior reveal the warm brick tone of the clay. The surface shows craquelure, kiln speckling, and a soot-darkened patina from hearth use, with minor fritting and small glaze losses consistent with age.
Produced in Vallauris, long celebrated for its distinctive pottery, this form served as a small saucepan for warming milk or sauces by the fire, its compact handle designed to rest near the coals. The spontaneous slip-trailed decoration adds rhythm to the utilitarian profile, reflecting the lively character of regional slipware. Today it brings authentic rustic charm, whether displayed on kitchen shelving with copper and tian bowls, used to hold wooden spoons, or styled with herbs or lavender as a decorative accent.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
