Antique Provençal Glazed Earthenware Tourne-Omelette - 9½"

This Provençal earthenware piece is a traditional "omelet-turning dish", and dates from the late 19th or early 20th century. Its broad, shallow bowl flares outward from a narrow raised foot, giving the piece a low, open profile that feels both practical and well balanced. The hand-crafted form is slightly irregular, with subtle variations to the rim and silhouette that underline its artisanal character. The warm cream-colored glaze is simply decorated with a couple concentric reddish-brown lines, including a gently undulating band around the rim. Scratches, small stains, rubbing and minor chips are visible throughout, all consistent with age and long kitchen use and contributing to its appealing rustic character. 

A tourne-omelette, also known as a vire-omelette, is a traditional Provençal kitchen utensil used to turn an omelet so it could cook evenly on both sides: the dish was placed over the frying pan, the two were flipped together, and the omelet was then slid back into the pan. The raised foot on the reverse provided a secure grip during the maneuver. Today, its wonderfully simple form and mellow, timeworn surface make it especially appealing as a fruit or serving dish on a kitchen island or country table.
