Antique Rustic French Mortar & Pestle Set - 3½" x 7½"

This rustic 19th-century hand-turned wooden mortar and pestle is distinguished by its broad, shallow form, dark brown surface and pleasingly irregular hand-worked profile. The mortar rests on a gently flared foot and has a slightly projecting rim, while the visible grain, uneven turning and small imperfections give the piece a strong handmade quality. The wood has darkened with time and use, developing a deep brown surface with warmer reddish tones showing through in areas of wear. Inside, pronounced abrasion records many years of grinding and use.

The accompanying pestle is especially well worn, with a smooth rounded handle and a broad working end that has become chipped and irregular through repeated use. Its darkened surface, scratches and losses add to the honest, utilitarian character of the set.
