Antique Savoyard Jaspé-Glazed Earthenware Broth Bowl - 4¾" x 7"

This charming handled bowl, or pot à bouillon (broth bowl), dates from the early 20th century and was handmade in Savoie or Haute-Savoie. Its rounded body rests on a low foot and is fitted with a generous loop handle, while the softly flared rim gives the form a pleasing openness. The warm cream-colored glaze is animated by freely applied green and reddish-brown decoration characteristic of jaspé wares, the flowing colors forming what resembles a stylized flower. The irregularity of the decoration emphasizes the handmade character of the piece. A few old chips and small areas of wear are visible, consistent with age and use.

Made for everyday domestic use, this charming bowl was intended for serving soup or broth. Its handle allowed the vessel to be lifted comfortably without touching the hot sides, while the flared form made the contents easier to cool and sip. The lively jaspé decoration, characteristic of the Savoyard pottery tradition, brought color and individuality to an otherwise practical object.
