"I found spoons like these one by one in brocantes — you never see them, and they are very, very rare," Patricia recalls. This silver sifting spoon is one of a small collection she assembled piece by piece over years of patient searching through French flea markets, and it shows exactly the kind of find that rewards a practiced eye. The bowl is broad and shallow, its rim elaborately chased with scrollwork and foliate motifs, the scalloped edge worked with fine decorative detail. At the center, a pierced floral pattern allows powdered sugar or fine spices to fall through in a controlled drift. The handle is slender and flat, engraved along its length with shell and acanthus motifs and tapering to a fan-shaped shell terminal — silversmithing of real confidence and accomplishment. The silver has the warm, slightly muted tone that comes with genuine age, catching the light differently across its chased and pierced surfaces. A spoon like this would have graced a well-appointed French table, used for dusting sugar over a tart or a bowl of fraises des bois. It is just as at home displayed in a small dish alongside antique flatware — or, as Patricia would no doubt prefer, actually used.
