This remarkable theatrical crown, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, comes from the estate of the legendary French actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) and may well have been worn in one of her stage productions. Made from brass, it features a series of arched panels outlined with beaded metalwork, alternating between raised crosses set with ruby-red glass stones and large emerald-green glass jewels. The richly ornamented design was intended to create the illusion of royal splendor under stage lighting. The brass has developed a warm, aged patina, with some verdigris, small dents and a few areas where the edging has become slightly detached.
Sarah Bernhardt (1844–1923), known as La Divine, was one of the most celebrated actresses of her time and among the first truly international stars. Renowned for her expressive performances, extravagant costumes and extraordinary personality, she captivated audiences across Europe and America in productions such as Phèdre, Ruy Blas, Théodora and Hamlet. She was also a cultural and fashion icon, immortalized in the celebrated posters of Alphonse Mucha. Although the particular production associated with this crown remains unidentified, its connection to her estate gives it a fascinating theatrical history.
Displayed on a simple stand, among antique portraits or in a cabinet of curiosities, the crown would make a wonderfully unexpected decorative object, its colorful jewels and elaborate silhouette retaining all their theatrical charm. Its association with Sarah Bernhardt makes it particularly desirable to collectors of theatrical memorabilia and admirers of the actress, but its appeal extends equally to anyone with a taste for unusual objects and a little extravagance.
