An antique streetscape oil on canvas from the dining room at Chanteduc, Patricia Wells’s Provençal home, signed and dated 1927. The artist’s name is hard to decipher, likely J. Salsan. Patricia explains, "I love the old couple walking slowly and the sense of chitter-chatter around them. It’s also signed." This sunny place du village (village square) feels intimate and alive, a glimpse of daily life in a village in Provence. In warm ochres and olive greens set against cool stone shadows, the lively brushwork captures terracotta façades with green shutters, neighbors pausing beneath a small awning, and dappled light filtering through a generous tree. Easy to place, it sits beautifully above a sideboard or near a kitchen table, where its gentle bustle invites conversation. It pairs naturally with everyday pottery, copper, and a bowl of seasonal fruit, bringing a touch of Provence to an American home while honoring Patricia’s lifelong eye for craft, terroir, and hospitality.
