This antique wall-mounted double-reservoir cutlery drainer was made in the late 19th century in Dieulefit in the Drôme region. An arched backplate, pierced for hanging, supports two generous integrated cups with gently flared rims and pierced bases for drainage. The surface is covered in a warm straw-yellow glaze. Cinnamon-toned foliate sprigs are applied in a loose, fluid hand to the front of each cup, while a softly undulating border runs along the arched backplate, framing the form. Subtle speckling from the firing and a slight warping of the backplate reflect its handmade character and add to its rustic appeal. A small old restoration is visible on the outer rim, along with glaze wear consistent with age and use.
This piece brings authentic country character to a kitchen or utility space. It can be hung near the sink to retain its original function, or placed in a work area to hold utensils and soap. It can also be used creatively as a holder for fresh herbs.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
