This generous wall-hung cutlery drainer in glazed earthenware dates to the late 19th century and is attributed to the Dieulefit region. The buff cream ground is enlivened with apple-green and cinnamon-toned brushstrokes, while a molded garland of roses frames a small standing figure in low relief, a rare feature on such pieces. The arched backplate is pierced for hanging and finished with a green rope-twist edge, set above two deep cups. The glaze shows a timeworn finish with firing specks and some losses to the high points and edges, which add to its antique appeal.
This type of wall-mounted drainer was commonly used in country kitchens, hung near the sink to dry and store everyday cutlery. The lively palette and molded decoration bring a cheerful touch and rustic charm to a kitchen or pantry, where it can still be used to hold cutlery or cooking utensils or dried sprigs of thyme or rosemary for cooking. In a utility or garden space, the twin compartments can hold small tools or soap while adding warmth and character.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
