This beautifully crafted antique travel chest or coffer is full of little drawers and compartments, from Chanteduc, the home of Patricia and Walter Wells in Provence. It has a latch that can be padlocked closed. It has been part of a display of a collection of boxes in the Wells' bedroom for decades. This weighty well-crafted piece is possibly walnut with perhaps oak used for the interior compartments. Note the dovetail joints at the corners and carved detail to the larger base. Patricia and Walter found this at an antique brocante in the south of France.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
