A remarkable carved limestone water spout, or _gueuloir_, dating from the 16th or 17th century and originating from eastern France. The substantial architectural fragment is carved with the crowned head of a king, his open mouth originally serving as the outlet for rainwater. The stone has acquired a beautiful weathered patina over centuries, with traces of the original carving marks still visible throughout. Timeworn condition consistent with age and long exterior exposure, including surface wear, small losses, and softened details that contribute to its character.
Once built into the masonry of an important building, this sculptural fragment survives as a striking example of early French architectural ornament. The crowned visage, expressive features, and monumental scale give it an extraordinary presence, while the rough-hewn sides reveal its former life embedded within a wall. Today, it makes a captivating decorative object for both interiors and gardens.
Equally compelling displayed on a pedestal, console, or among architectural fragments, it can also be repurposed as an exceptional jardinière. The deep hollowed cavity is ideal for planting succulents, trailing greenery, or seasonal flowers, creating a dramatic contrast between living foliage and centuries-old stone. Whether used indoors or outdoors, it brings texture, history, and undeniable sculptural impact to a space.
