A rare and imposing pair of architectural fluted oak columns in three parts, retaining a layered original sage-green patina with areas where the underlying wood gently shows through, giving them depth and authenticity. Their presence is striking: each rises from a heavily carved square plinth with a rope-moulded collar, supporting a tall fluted shaft and a capital enriched with acanthus carving and small volutes. The surfaces display an honest, timeworn character with scattered abrasions, corner chips, and natural paint losses that reveal the wood beneath. Made in the early 20th century for an elegant townhouse in Marseille, they reflect the classical revival style of the period and offer a bold statement of architectural grandeur and rare decorative appeal.
During the Belle Époque, decorative columns like these played an important role in bringing rhythm, elegance, and architectural structure to domestic interiors. The architecture of the period embraced the dominant trend across France and Europe: eclecticism, a movement defined by freely drawing inspiration from earlier classical, Roman, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque forms. Within homes, such columns were typically used to frame enfilades, salons, or entrance halls, adding classical order while acting as expressive elements that heightened symmetry, guided movement through a space, and introduced a quiet sense of grandeur to early 20th-century rooms.
They add immediate architectural presence to an entry hall or great room, flanking a doorway, mantel, or long console to create a strong focal axis. In a library or dining room, the pair can anchor cabinetry or define functional areas with commanding presence. Their softly faded sage green partners beautifully with limestone, aged bronze, and natural linens, making them an effortless fit for classical rooms, refined rural interiors, or well-collected eclectic spaces.
