A heavy enameled steel direction sign from the Paris Métro, dating to the 1930s, it carries a bold deep blue border and lettering set against a clean white ground. The elongated rectangular panel is crisply printed with the heading “Directions” above destinations including Place Balard, Porte de Charenton, and Montreuil, and is anchored below by a single elongated directional arrow. The vitreous surface remains glossy, and the original mounting holes are visible at the edges. Pronounced enamel losses are visible to the lower left corner, with additional edge chipping and oxidation especially around the fixing points, alongside surface marks consistent with decades of public use. The sign remains structurally sound, presenting with strong colour and gloss despite its honest, timeworn patina.
This graphic piece brings an understated urban note to interiors, working equally well above a console in an entry, along a hallway gallery wall, or propped on shelving in a study or kitchen. Its strong typographic presence pairs naturally with industrial lighting, raw timber, and pared back contemporary furniture, yet it also adds welcome contrast to more classic rooms. Hung over a doorway to suggest the flow of a space or layered into a collection of maps and architectural drawings, it lends a sense of place and quiet authenticity. The sign is pierced with eight holes for secure wall mounting, and owing to its weight, appropriate fixings are recommended.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
