Crafted around 1930 by the prestigious French silversmith Christofle, this elegant Art Deco wine cradle belongs to the firm’s celebrated Gallia line, known for its refined and innovative silverplate designs. The cradle features sleek, geometric contours and a gently curved form designed specifically to support a bottle of Burgundy wine. The shape is both functional and sculptural, specifically tailored to accommodate the wider base and gently sloping shoulders of Burgundy bottles (and other similarly shaped bottles) which nestle perfectly into its frame. In contrast, a Bordeaux bottle, with its taller, straighter profile, would not sit as securely, highlighting the precision and intention behind this thoughtful design.
The model is often referred to as the  “Beaune” pattern, a name that pays homage to the historic town of Beaune in the Burgundy region of France renowned for its exceptional wines. This cradle was reportedly used in iconic settings such as the Orient Express and the Ritz in Paris, further enhancing its pedigree and appeal. The hallmark on the base includes the Christofle name, the Gallia stamp, and the traditional silverplate markings, confirming its authenticity and quality.
Both a collector’s item and a striking accent for the table or bar, this wine cradle brings together heritage, elegance, and functionality. Whether used to serve a fine bottle at dinner or displayed as part of a curated vignette, it offers a refined nod to French design and the art of wine.
