Art Deco Vase by Jean Gerbino Vallauris - 12½" w/ Intricate Neriage Mosaic

This Vallauris ceramic vase by Jean Gerbino (1876–1966), dating to the early to mid-20th century, features a classic form with a tall, waisted body, a flared mouth, and a rounded lower section. Composed of colored clays that have been turned and polished into a fine mosaic, it displays a dense scatter of teal, celadon, ochre, russet, and ivory tones, framed by narrow black lines. Two broad bands encircle the neck and shoulder, adorned with abstract floral medallions. The surface is in very good condition, with only light wear to the high points and minor age-related rubbing. No chips or cracks are observed. The piece is signed under the base.

Gerbino, a Sicilian-born potter who settled in the renowned ceramics center of Vallauris, developed a highly distinctive process rooted in the ancient nériage technique originating in East Asia and based on layering differently colored clays to create patterns integral to the body rather than applied on the surface. He refined this approach into his own “terres mosaïquées,” assembling and slicing blocks of tinted clay to produce intricate, continuous designs when thrown on the wheel. This technical innovation earned him the Grand Prix at the Concours Lépine in Paris in 1931. His work bridges late Art Nouveau and Art Deco, with dense micro-mosaic grounds and structured decorative bands becoming a hallmark of his studio.

Sought after by collectors for its complex craftsmanship and unmistakable surface, this vase is a fine example of early Vallauris artistry.
