Shaped as a standing woman in traditional regional dress and coiffe, this charming figure jug was handcrafted in Nevers faience in the late 18th or early 19th century. Painted by hand on a soft white ground, it is decorated with sponged blue borders, scattered floral sprigs, a saffron-yellow shawl, and a red sash tied at the waist, while the bonnet is picked out with graphic blue accents. The spout is ingeniously formed at the brim of the headdress, the handle curves discreetly behind the shoulders, and the base is finished with a green-edged foot. The piece remains in good, gently timeworn condition, with small glaze nicks at the base and light surface wear consistent with age and use.
The faience workshops of Nevers, in central France along the Loire River, were renowned for producing lively domestic wares alongside whimsical character jugs such as this one, intended for tavern tables and everyday household use. These figural pitchers were traditionally known as Jacquot for male figures and Jacquotte for female counterparts, their playful forms and bright decoration reflecting popular taste rather than courtly refinement. Today, they are prized for their folk character, regional identity, and the spontaneity of their hand-painted decoration, offering a vivid glimpse into everyday life and convivial rituals in provincial France at the turn of the 19th century.
Set on a kitchen dresser, a dining console, or a country house mantel, it lends a soft, folkloric note and an inviting touch of color. Use it as a petite flower vase for herbs or daisies, or display it alongside Delft, creamware, and other tin glazed pieces to build a thoughtful ceramic vignette. Its modest scale makes it ideal for layering on open shelves, and the hand painted details bring warmth to both traditional and collected contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
