An atmospheric oil on isorel panel depicting the north face of the Aiguille du Géant in the Mont Blanc massif, signed with a monogram and dated 1954 at lower left. The composition unfolds in a cool Alpine palette of glacier blues, slate, and umber against an off-white snowfield, with measured, naturalistic brushwork and softly rendered cloud forms. An old label to the reverse identifies the subject, while the wood frame displays a weathered brown and ochre finish that echoes the rocky strata. Condition is very good, with a stable panel and subtle surface wear; the frame bears a gently worn patina with minor abrasions, consistent with age.
Created in the postwar mid century period, this work stands in the tradition of Alpine landscape painting that drew artists and mountaineers to Chamonix and Courmayeur from the late 19th century onward. The Aiguille du Géant, a granite needle straddling the French Italian border, rises above the Glacier du Géant and the Vallée Blanche, long favored for their dramatic geology and crystalline light.
Ideal for a chalet or mountain retreat, it brings a sense of cool clarity to a stone fireplace wall, entryway, or paneled study. Display it as a focal point, or integrate it into a salon-style arrangement with vintage Alpine photographs and maps to create a refined, travel-inspired vignette.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
