Beach at Pornichet by E. Breysse - Oil on Card Early to Mid-20th Century - 14½" x 24½"

A gracefully panoramic French coastal painting from the early to mid-20th century, this oil on card by Emile Breysse (1880–1965) depicts the Beach at Pornichet on the Atlantic coast. The elongated panel captures a windswept sky, sailboats on the horizon, and figures along a sandy shore anchored by a rugged rocky outcrop. Executed with a thick, tactile touch, the harmonious palette moves from pearly greys and sea blues to ochre and russet notes. It is presented in a gilt and painted wood frame with a cream liner, signed and dedicated at lower right to Madame Bolander. The painting is in good condition, with slight dust settled within the thick brushstrokes. The frame shows scattered abrasions, small areas of gilding loss, and age marks to the liner that speak to its years.

Breysse, known for his seascapes, worked along the Atlantic coast where Belle Époque resorts met working harbors. His approach draws on late Impressionism and the discipline of outdoor painting, using oil on card for immediacy and a lively surface. Confident impasto builds the rolling clouds and glints of light on water, while the personal dedication suggests a gift within the artist’s circle. Pornichet, near La Baule in Loire-Atlantique, was known for its wide beaches and dramatic tides, a setting well suited to Breysse’s atmospheric hand.
