This beautiful late 19th-century French dinner service by Lunéville comprises 27 plates: 16 dinner plates and 11 soup bowls. The decoration is particularly appealing for its pale buttery-yellow ground, a less commonly encountered alternative to the traditional white. Each plate features a colorful bouquet of tulips and smaller flowers in shades of pink, red, yellow and violet, accompanied by delicate green foliage. Smaller floral sprigs are scattered around the gently scalloped rims, finished with a fine coral-red border that brings definition and warmth to the design. The plates remain in attractive condition overall, retaining their cheerful colors, with light rubbing and occasional wear to the decoration and edges consistent with age. Each bears the Lunéville manufacturer's mark underneath.
The pale buttery-yellow ground, colorful flowers and gently scalloped rims give this service an irresistible French country charm. The 27 plates offer plenty of possibilities for entertaining, bringing warmth and color to a table dressed with simple linen and glassware or more eclectic, layered settings. They would be equally appealing arranged on a wall or displayed on a kitchen dresser or mantel, where their cheerful floral decoration can be enjoyed every day.
