This 19th-century earthenware water jug from Provence features the classic regional form used for drawing and cooling water, with a rounded body, a short raised spout, a large arched carry handle spanning the rim, and a secondary smaller handle, this double-handle configuration designed for both lifting and pouring. The upper half retains a mottled green glaze with graceful losses that reveal the warm clay beneath, while the lower section remains unglazed and earthy. Wear to the handles, including softened edges and glaze loss, reflects generations of handling and underscores its well-used, utilitarian nature. Chips at the spout and rim wear further attest to daily service and contribute to its authentic patina.
Display it on open kitchen shelving, a dining console, or a stone mantel, where its deep green color and tactile surface bring quiet character. Its rustic presence pairs beautifully with linen, raw wood, and contemporary ceramics, adding an authentic note that gently softens refined interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
