This charming petite oil on panel still life of mimosas is signed _Rose Martin_ at the lower right, a painter noted for floral subjects. The composition shows sprigs of bright yellow mimosa with feathery foliage alongside a small bouquet of violets, arranged against what appears to be a reed box or basket on a neutral tabletop. Deep greens, umbers, and soft violet accents enrich the palette. It is presented in a richly ornamented giltwood frame with a running foliate border in the Belle Époque taste, with areas of wear and later gilt paint.
Floral still life painting enjoyed renewed popularity from the late 19th into the early 20th century, when decorative arts and painting closely engaged with domestic interiors. Mimosa, a winter-blooming emblem of the Côte d’Azur, became a favored motif in bouquets and tableaux, its golden pompons adding brightness and cheer to subdued grounds. Rose Martin, known for her flower pieces, carries this tradition forward with delicacy and coloristic charm.
Graceful in scale, this work is ideal wherever a touch of nature and poetry is desired. It hangs beautifully above a petite commode, layered into a salon-style gallery wall, or resting on a mantel. The warm gilding of the frame and the citron tones of the mimosa pair effortlessly with stone, plaster, and natural woods, complementing French country, traditional, or collected contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
