Black-Patinated Bronze Allegorical Figure Nil Virtuti Invium by Henri Gauquié dated 1929 - 15¼"

A petite black-patinated bronze reduction of Henri Gauquié’s celebrated Nil Virtuti Invium, dating to the early 20th century. The athletic nude youth strides forward in a dynamic contrapposto, his wrists trailing broken cords, while the rocky base bears the Latin motto. The bronze is signed H. Gauquié in the cast and retains a rich black patina with soft highlights. It is mounted on a turned wooden plinth fitted with a brass plaque recording its presentation in 1929 by fellow members of a pioneering non-profit federation in southern France. The patina remains beautifully deep and glossy, with only minor losses at a few high points, including one toe, while the wooden plinth shows light age-related wear. 

Henri Gauquié (1858–1927) was a celebrated French academic sculptor who studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, receiving numerous awards before being appointed a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in 1900. First conceived in the late 19th century, Nil Virtuti Invium (“Nothing is inaccessible to virtue”) embodies perseverance, merit, and achievement. Its symbolism made reductions such as this especially fitting as presentation gifts, with the inscribed plaque preserving the personal history of this particular example.
