A sculpted hare’s head reclines across the gently domed lid of this brown-glazed ceramic terrine, its long ears laid back and its features softly modeled beneath a deep chestnut glaze with subtle tonal variation. The rich, glossy surface accentuates the contours of the animal, lending the piece both warmth and character. The rectangular base, with softly rounded corners and a slightly flared rim, balances the playful lid with a restrained, utilitarian form. Likely produced in the mid-20th century, this terrine follows a long tradition of country pottery made for the storage and presentation of pâté, game pies, or rillettes, with animal-topped lids serving as visual cues to the contents within. Such pieces were commonly used by charcutiers or in domestic kitchens, valued as much for their decorative appeal as for their practical function.
The terrine presents in very good vintage condition, with light wear to the glaze along the edges consistent with age and use, and no visible cracks or repairs. A charming example of rustic French ceramic tradition, it is equally suited to display or continued use. Style it on a kitchen shelf or sideboard to bring warmth and a note of countryside whimsy, or repurpose it as a lidded container for tea, spices, or wrapped sweets. It also makes an inviting seasonal centerpiece on the Easter dining table.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
