Car rental sign 1950s - Locations d'automobiles 14¼" x 14½"

SKU: 15298

US$990 US$1,389
This superb sign dates from the 1950s. It was originally displayed on the roofs of rental cars (like a small version of Hertz, Europcar etc.) and when the car was available, the red metal flag 'Libre' was upright. When the car was rented, the flag was lowered inside the sign - similar to the way that American mail boxes display their red flags, see video. The two-sided metal sign reads 'Locations d'automobiles Barbiere a Brive Telephone 57.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
Approx. overall 14¼" high x 14½" x ¾"
Approx. overall 36cm high x 37cm x 2cm
