Cartonnage Confectionery Box from Maison Vogade Nice - 9¾"

An octagonal early to mid-20th century French cartonnage box from Nice, as indicated by the interior mark “Vogade – Nice.” Vogade was a celebrated confectioner and pâtisserie on the famous Place Masséna, and boxes such as this would originally have contained refined sweets. 

The lid is decorated with a romantic pastoral scene in an engraving-style print, depicting a young woman riding side-saddle on a donkey, accompanied by a hunter with his rifle and a faithful hound beneath a woodland canopy. The sides are finished in textile panels richly embroidered with metallic thread in a geometric pattern, adding subtle texture and depth. Condition is consistent with age, with light fraying to the textile edges, and minor marks to the lid and interior, all contributing to its authentic, timeworn charm.

Nicely evocative and full of nostalgic charm, it is ideal for holding letters, ribbons, or small treasures, whether placed on a dressing table, bedside, or desk.
