Carved Meerschaum Bas-Relief of The Descent from the Cross after Rubens, c. 1860-1880 - 17" x 13½"

A finely carved oval bas-relief depicting The Descent from the Cross, dating from around 1860 to 1880. Executed in what is likely meerschaum, the relief displays exceptional depth and delicacy, with an intricate arrangement of figures surrounding the body of Christ. Inspired by Peter Paul Rubens' celebrated Descent from the Cross, the composition beautifully captures the dramatic movement and emotional intensity of the Baroque masterpiece in an intimate devotional format. Presented beneath its original glass dome within an oval wooden frame, later repainted in a gilt finish, the relief remains in very good condition with only light age-related wear. The frame shows scattered rubbing, small nicks, and minor losses consistent with age. 

The composition derives from Rubens' monumental altarpiece painted for Antwerp Cathedral between 1612 and 1614, one of the defining masterpieces of the Flemish Baroque. Throughout the 19th century, celebrated religious paintings such as this were frequently reinterpreted as sculptural reliefs for private devotion, allowing collectors to bring celebrated works of art into the home on a more intimate scale. The exceptionally fine carving is a testament to the skill of the artisan, who rendered each expressive figure, cascading fold of drapery, and architectural detail with extraordinary clarity and refinement.
