This tall carved and painted stone figure depicts a Hindu deity, likely Krishna playing the flute, India, early to mid-20th century. Traces of deep green and earthy pigments soften the chiseled modeling of the pleated robe and serene face, while the upright stance on a low integral base suggests a devotional presence. In Hindu tradition, Krishna is associated with protection, compassion, tenderness, and love.
The underside is pierced to accept a dowel, allowing the figure to be mounted on a stand. The surface is timeworn and weathered, with scattered losses to the paint, small chips along the edges, and an old loss to the top of the head, all consistent with age and adding to its soulful, worn beauty. Displayed on a custom plinth, the figure’s vertical silhouette and remaining pigment are especially well highlighted, though it can also stand on its own, with improved stability on a stand. It brings a lyrical, contemplative mood to a console, niche, or meditation corner, and pairs beautifully with handwoven textiles, bronze accents, and soft candlelight.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
