This cast iron birdbath spent years in the courtyard at Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter Wells's farmhouse near Vaison-la-Romaine, holding its own among the grapevine and stone with the ease of something that has always belonged exactly where it is. Designed to be spiked directly into the earth rather than set on a pedestal, it has no foot — just a long, slender iron stake that anchors it low and close to the garden, keeping it at the level of the beds rather than above them. A small bird perches on the rim of the shallow basin, tail raised, as if it arrived just ahead of the others. Below, the stem opens into a decorative panel of cast branches, scrolling vines and leaves — the kind of ornamental ironwork once common in French country gardens. The whole piece has aged to a deep, warm rust, the surface rough and textured with years of outdoor life. It came to Patricia and Walter as a gift from friends, and Patricia describes it with characteristic directness: "It's very cute and not too practical — it's tiny, so good for tiny birds."
