This small circular ceramic medallion, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, depicts a winged putto in relief, holding a theatrical mask and a crook, all finished in a soft green glaze. The composition draws on classical iconography, where the putto—an emblem of divine inspiration and youthful exuberance—evokes the spirit of performance. The theatrical mask, likely representing comedy, alludes to the traditions of ancient Greek drama, while the staff may reference Dionysian imagery or pastoral symbolism.
This decorative plaque was designed for wall display, possibly as part of a neoclassical ensemble celebrating the arts. Minor wear and small chips along the edge attest to its age and add character to the surface. The piece reflects the 19th-century fascination with allegorical subjects and classical antiquity, rendered here with a charming naïveté and subtle glaze.
