This characterful mid-20th-century French cast-stone toad sits in a charming crouched pose, its broad back, rounded haunches, and wide splayed feet giving it a quietly monumental presence. The reconstituted stone shows a warm buff tone mottled with soft green patina, and its rustic, irregular surface convincingly evokes warty skin, while years of outdoor exposure have gently softened its facial features into a pleasing, time-worn blur. Weathered from the garden, it displays scattered pitting, minor nicks along the high points, and subtle rounding at the extremities.
This compact sculpture invites placement beside a pond, on a terrace step, or tucked into a border where its naturalistic surface blends with stone and greenery. Indoors, it brings garden character to a sunroom or conservatory when set on a console or hearth, pairing well with terracotta, zinc jardinières, and painted furniture. Use it as a grounded accent to anchor a vignette of potted plants or to lend quiet whimsy to an entry.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
