This petite French perpetual calendar presents as a circular plaque of embossed tin with a warm bronzed patina, richly worked with scrolling foliage and a palmette border. Four small apertures reveal ivory-toned tabs printed in black for the date, day, month, and year, with the script in French and the year scale running from 1892 through 1901, the 1901 cartouche more ornate than the others. The surface is mellowed with age and enriched by minor oxidation and flecks of verdigris along the rim. Light abrasions to the raised ornament and gentle wear to the printed tabs attest to its history, while a missing turn button, slight stiffness in movement, and a small hole at the back, likely made for hanging, further enhance its authentic charm.
Perpetual calendars of this type were common fixtures in French homes and shops in the final decades of the 1800s, combining practical function with decorative metalwork. Embossed tinplate allowed manufacturers to achieve crisp relief ornament at modest cost, and the scrolling foliate design reflects the transition from high Second Empire taste to the softer curves that would usher in early Art Nouveau. Small knobs or pins were used to advance internal drums or slips, letting the owner set the day, month, and date while a separate window recorded the year, here culminating in the celebratory turn to 1901.
A charming accent for a writing desk, library console, or kitchen wall, it pairs well with worn leather, dark woods, and other period stationery pieces. Display it on a small easel, incorporate it into a wall vignette of framed ephemera, or place it near an entry table as a daily ritual object. Its compact scale and subdued patina make it an easy companion to both traditional and collected interiors, adding a quiet note of late 19th-century French character.
