This ornate late 19th-century French umbrella stand in enameled cast iron is finished in soft cornflower blue and retains its original white enamel drip tray. The openwork backplate is richly cast with C-scrolls, acanthus, and a pair of stylized dolphins, all raised on a molded plinth with a running leaf border. A rectangular guard ring outlines the top, neatly accommodating umbrellas and canes. Above it, a small handle ensures effortless carrying, while the removable tray enhances convenience in daily use. The back is stamped with a maker’s mark and model number. The enamel shows scattered wear, small chips, and light oxidation, all contributing to its antique charm.
Favored in France during the Napoléon III period and Belle Epoque, enameled cast iron umbrella stands combined refined openwork casting with durable material. In this charming example, the lively ornament draws on Renaissance Revival and Baroque sources, while the blue-and-white enamel introduces a discreet touch of color.
In an entry or mudroom, it brings both function and character, pairing beautifully with marble, gilt, or ebonized furnishings. Its chic blue enamel complements coastal and Scandinavian-inspired palettes, while the pierced design keeps it visually light in a narrow hallway. Use it for umbrellas and walking sticks, or place it near a library or garden door as a decorative accent with historic presence and a dash of color.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
