Dating to the late 19th century, this petite Italian three-drawer commode features a softly serpentine front beneath a molded top with canted corners, all raised on elegant cabriole legs and a shaped apron. The case is veneered in richly figured walnut burl with deep honey and umber tones, its swirling grain framed by slender molded edges. Each drawer retains its original round brass pulls, finely cast with an urn-and-foliage motif framed by a laurel wreath border. The metal has mellowed to a soft antique gold, showing oxidation and gentle wear that harmonize beautifully with the warmth of the walnut veneer. The classical ornamentation of the handles adds an elegant note to the commode’s rustic charm.
The piece presents age-related surface scratches, minor shrinkage lines, oxidation to the hardware, and scattered old veneer repairs, including a discoloration patch to one side small edge losses, details that do not detract from the commode’s enduring charm and personality. A light application of beeswax polish could gently revive the sheen of the walnut and enhance its warm, time-softened glow.
Its petite scale makes it ideal between twin beds as a shared night table, tucked between windows in a sitting room, or centered between doors in an entry with a mirror above. Use the drawers for linens, stationery, or discreet hallway storage while the top provides a graceful stage for a vase or a favorite collection.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
