Charming Petite Black-Patinated Bronze Figure of a Crouching Boy on a Rocky Outcrop - 9½"

This particularly charming petite bronze figure depicts a young boy crouching on a rocky outcrop, nude apart from a broad-brimmed hat. His lowered gaze and gently extended hands suggest that he may be absorbed in an activity by the water, perhaps fishing. The pose is wonderfully natural, with delicate, realistic modeling of the body and a pleasing contrast between the smooth figure and the more freely worked surface of the rock. The dark, almost black patina shows gentle rubbing to the raised areas, consistent with age and helping to highlight the delicate modeling of the figure.

The subject and treatment relate closely to the Neapolitan Verismo tradition and to the young fishermen modeled by Achille D’Orsi (1845–1929). This example is unsigned, however, and may be a later cast or reissue of a late 19th-century model.

Its petite scale makes it an especially appealing little sculpture, very easy to place. The boy’s sun hat, bare figure and absorbed pose evoke the warmth and simplicity of a Mediterranean summer, while the dark bronze brings a strong sculptural contrast. It would sit beautifully among books and collected objects on an antique console or mantel, but we particularly like the contrast it creates in a more streamlined setting, placed against pale plaster, limestone or travertine. Its intimate scale invites close viewing, where the sensitive modeling and character of the figure can really be appreciated.
