Chinese Black Lacquer and Gilt Armchair Early 20th Century - 37½"

An early 20th century Chinese armchair in black lacquered wood richly decorated with gilt painting. The square frame is defined by a broad openwork back, straight arms, and a low gallery rail surrounding the seat, all raised on straight legs joined by stretchers. The form is architectural and balanced, drawing on traditional Chinese furniture while emphasizing surface decoration. 

The chair is profusely ornamented with hand-painted gilt motifs on a deep black ground. Greek key borders frame the edges while floral sprays and stylized cloud patterns animate the rails and legs. The seat panel is particularly decorative, featuring a finely detailed landscape scene with a pagoda, bridge, mountains, and trees rendered in delicate gold lines. This level of ornament continues across the back and apron, creating a richly layered surface that catches the light and rewards close viewing. In traditional Chinese scholar furniture the seat is usually plain; the presence of such an elaborate scene here suggests the chair was intended to be displayed and admired as much as used, likely crafted for domestic elites or foreign buyers drawn to richly decorated lacquer furniture. 

The chair remains in good antique condition with visible wear to the lacquer and gilding, including rubbing and small losses that reveal the wood beneath in places. The seat panel shows a crack, reinforcing its role today as a decorative piece rather than a functional chair. These signs of age contribute to the patina and authentic character of the piece. With its striking black and gold palette and richly detailed decoration, the chair reads as a statement object.
