Dating from the early twentieth century, this superb clay sculpture of Marianne would have originally been displayed in a Mayor's office or school. It is unusual that Marianne wears a lion's head on her chest. Unsigned.

Marianne is a symbolic figure of the French Republic. In the guise of a woman wearing a Phrygian cap (liberty cap), she represents the French Republic and its values expressed by its motto: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity".
