This petite hand-thrown ceramic milk jug by the Cloutier Brothers exemplifies the expressive irregularity and sculptural spontaneity of their studio work. The softly distorted cylindrical body rises to a pinched spout and a rounded strap handle, each element intentionally shaped by hand rather than turned to symmetry. The exterior is coated in a lustrous rouge "japonais" glaze, named for its resemblance to traditional Japanese lacquer, that flows in rich tonal waves from deep crimson to plum with subtle marbling. Inside, a pale celadon-grey glaze provides a cool contrast with natural variations from firing. Signed to the underside and dating to the 1960s, this piece reflects the Cloutiers’ artistic approach to functional pottery. Condition is very good, with light wear to the lip and minor firing irregularities consistent with its handmade nature.

Robert and Jean Cloutier were twin brothers born in Paris in 1930 and trained at the École de Céramique de Meaux, then apprenticed in prominent Paris-based workshops including those of Georges Jouve (Robert) and Michel Rivière (Jean), followed by time working under Pol Chambost. In 1955 they established their own studio and began producing utilitarian ceramics such as vases, jugs, lamps, infused with bold decorative flair, whimsical anthropomorphic and zoomorphic motifs, and rich glazes. Notably they developed their signature “Rouge Cloutier” red enamel and innovative firing techniques in the 1960s. The Cloutier brothers’ career spanned decades and included interior architectural projects and collaborations with leading manufacturers. Their work is celebrated for blending technical mastery with irreverent, poetic design. Robert died in 2008, Jean in 2015, leaving behind a body of work that continues to influence collectors and ceramists alike.

This petite pitcher’s compact scale and warm red glaze make it both an elegant accent and a small work of art. Its sculptural irregularity and hand-thrown form embody the expressive artistry of the Cloutier Brothers, turning a functional object into a study in color and texture. It sits beautifully on a breakfast tray or open kitchen shelving, adding a subtle yet vibrant touch of color. Styled as a creamer alongside stoneware and linen, or repurposed as a bud vase on a nightstand, it brings warmth and individuality.
